The Volunteer Team at Rocky Gap State Park and one of its members, Brian Grim, were recently recognized by Gov. Martin O’Malley for contributing to the community through volunteer service. The team and Grim were both nominated for awards and both received certificates honoring their efforts.
The Volunteer Team began in 1992, became incorporated in 1995, and has grown from just a dozen volunteers to nearly 200 volunteers. In 2007, the team contributed more than 20,000 hours of volunteer service at Rocky Gap State Park, Dan’s Mountain State Park and Green Ridge State Forest. The Volunteer Team was the second most active volunteer organization in the entire state of Maryland’s Park Service.
In 2007, the team was involved in maintenance projects ranging from the rebuilding of picnic tables to special events like the Easter egg hunt. The team assists annually with the American Red Cross Mountain Reflections light display as well.
Grim has been a member of the Volunteer Team since 1992 and was recognized for his significant contribution to the team in 2007. He volunteered more than 1,300 hours in 2007, assisting the park in general operations, as well as lending support to events at Rocky Gap. “It’s an honor to be recognized, but that’s not why I volunteer. That’s not why anybody volunteers,” said Grim. “I just want to see things happen, change, improve. That’s why I do what I do. And I think I’m making a difference,”
The Volunteer Team is active all year, performing maintenance tasks, planning events and working in support of the parks.
Anyone interested in participating with the team should call (301) 777-8300 or log on to www.volunteerteam.org.
