Accidents Cause Injuries

Vehicles collide on state Route 36, U.S. Route 220; seven taken to hospital

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

CORRIGANVILLE - A Hyndman, Pa., woman was flown to the Western Maryland Health System's Memorial campus after she reportedly hit another vehicle head-on Monday afternoon.

It was one of two such collisions Monday that sent seven people to Memorial.

Shelby Uphold, 71, was driving on state Route 36 near Porter Town Road in Corriganville about 2:52 p.m. when her 2001 Subaru Outback crossed the center line and struck a 2003 Jeep Cherokee driven by Lorraine Bryant, 38, of Mount Savage, the Maryland State Police at LaVale said.

Uphold was flown by the state police Medevac helicopter while Bryant, as well as two juvenile passengers, ages 11 and 6, also of Mount Savage, were taken to Memorial for various injuries, by ambulance. Information on their conditions was unavailable.

Members of the Corriganville, Mount Savage and LaVale volunteer fire departments responded as did an ambulance crew from Cumberland.

Tfc. D.W. Yates investigated.

A little more than an hour later, three people were transported to Memorial following a head-on accident on U.S. Route 220 at Primrose Street in Bowling Green.

The wreck happened after a 17-year-old girl, whose name was not released, apparently fell asleep, causing the 2001 Chevrolet Impala she was in to cross the center line and hit a vehicle driven by Marie Ellen Buzzerd, 43, of Cumberland. State police said the two as well as a 9-year-old boy in Buzzerd's 2001 Subaru Forester were taken to the hospital by Cresaptown's ambulance.

Police said the 17-year-old's injuries appeared to be minor but the extent of Buzzerd's and her passenger's injuries were unknown. The juvenile driver was charged with failure to drive right of center.

In addition to Cresaptown, the Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department responded.

Tfc. B.J. Jeffries investigated.
