Young writers cited

For the Cumberland Times-News

Hundreds of aspiring writers were honored by the West Virginia Department of Education on Young Writers Celebration Day 2008.

The writers, who competed in the 25th annual Young Writers Contest, were recognized May 9 at the University of Charleston’s Riggleman Hall. The statewide competition recognized and encouraged writing excellence from kindergarten to high school.

“Writing is one of the most important skills for academic and professional success,” West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Steve Paine said. “As we prepare students for the 21st century, clear communication through writing is more important than ever.”

Winners were: Grades 1-2, Maguire Glass, Ohio County; grades 3-4, Justin Crockett, Wayne; grades 5-6, Skyler Malone, Mineral; grades 7-8, Josh Crawford, Hampshire; grades 9-10, Nicholas Underwood, Raleigh; and grades 11-12, Jacqueline Trumbull, Monongalia.

Musician Ron Sowell from West Virginia Public Radio’s “Mountain Stage” delivered the keynote address. The day’s events also included the awarding of a $750 Barbara W. Walters Scholarship to a high school senior as well as recognition of county and state winners. Twenty digital cameras were given away.

The Young Writers Contest is sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education and the West Virginia Writing Project, which is part of the effort to improve writing in America. Through its professional development model, the Writing Project builds the leadership, programs and research needed for teachers to help their students become successful writers and learners.
