From Staff Reports

Stolen vehicle breaks down

FLINTSTONE — A disabled stolen vehicle and the person who allegedly took it were found along Interstate 68 near Flintstone about 2:45 a.m. Friday by Maryland Tfc. J.L. Layton.

Layton’s discovery of the 1989 Pontiac Grand Am and Herman R. Smith III, 34, Cumberland, came almost immediately after Cumberland Police Department broadcast information about the theft of the vehicle from Pear Street.

Smith was charged with DUI, driving while his license was revoked, suspended and expired, along with motor vehicle theft, and was in the Allegany County Detention Center late Friday on a bond of $5,000.

24 seatbelts not buckled

LONACONING — Allegany County sheriff’s deputies Thursday issued 24 citations to people who were not buckled up during a nighttime seatbelt enforcement effort from Lonaconing to Westernport. In addition, a citation was issued in the case of a child not restrained in a safety seat.

The work was part of the Maryland Chief’s Challenge and the nationwide Click It or Ticket effort.

Police look for missing teen

CUMBERLAND — All leads in the missing person case of a Boone Street teenager have been exhausted and police now are asking the public for assistance.

Heather Hamilton, 17, was last seen leaving her residence May 11 but was not reported missing to Cumberland Police until May 17. She is believed to be in the company of Michael Albright of Flintstone.

Hamilton is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 135 pounds with blue eyes and shoulder-length red hair. She was wearing Capri jeans and Nike tennis shoes when she left her home.

Police said Albright called Hamilton’s mother on May 14 and said while Heather was OK, she was not with him at the time. Hamilton later called her mother but she has not been heard from since.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at (301) 777-1600.
