Bear Watch - June 14, 2009

Highway bear mortality in Maryland has risen to nine for 2009.

On May 30, a 13-pound cub was struck and killed on U.S. Route 219 near Point View Inn at McHenry.

On June 2, a 75-pound female died on Interstate 70 near the Frederick/Washington counties line.

On June 4, two cubs, one male and one female, each 14 pounds died on U.S. Route 219 at McHenry.

On June 3, the Maryland Wildlife Service trapped a bear with mange near Ellerslie and euthanized it. It was a male of 91 pounds.

In late May, a 125-pound female nuisance bear was euthanized in Garrett County. It had entered a house on Foster Road, a chicken coop on Bray School Road, and was put down after putting its nose on a window and watching a family eat dinner. “It had unfortunately learned some bad habits,” said Wildlife Biologist Clarissa Harris.
