Weekend Garrett County house fires ruled accidental

GRANTSVILLE — Two separate fires that occurred Sunday to residences on Chestnut Ridge Road and Foster’s Inn Road were both accidental, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.

A fire shortly after 2 p.m. at the Anthony and Heather Hackett residence at 3735 Chestnut Ridge Road caused a loss of $30,000 to the property and $5,000 to the structure.

The fire originated in a bedroom ceiling fan as the result of an electrical malfunction, according to Deputy Fire Marshal E. Ernst.

The fire was discovered by the occupants. There were were no injuries.

About three dozen volunteer firefighters from Grantsville, Deep Creek, Eastern Garrett, Bittinger and Salisbury, Pa., responded.

A fire shortly after 5 a.m. at 162 Foster’s Inn Road was determined to be accidental and caused by discarded smoking materials. No one was injured.

The incident at the Roger Tilgner property caused a loss of $900 to the contents and $100 to the single-story wood frame dwelling, according to Deputy Fire Marshal Jamie Rodeheaver.

Thirty volunteer firefighters from Grantsville, Deep Creek and Salisbury, Pa., responded along with the Northern Garrett Rescue Squad.
