Allegany Magazine's 2008 'Face of Summer'

CUMBERLAND - Back in late winter and early spring, Allegany Magazine asked its readers to submit a photograph that best evoked the face of summer in Allegany County.

"We wanted an intriguing face, a face full of emotion and spirit - an irresistible or hypnotic image that would make a person stop in his or her tracks and look at the design and the cover of our June/July issue," said Managing Editor Shane Riggs.

After poring over more than 200 entries from amateur and professional photographers alike, members of the staff of Allegany Magazine chose an entry by Cumberland resident Cindy Wilson of her then 8-month-old daughter, Ella Minnick, to represent the magazine's 2008 "Face of Summer" cover.

"This time, the decision was unanimous. The daughter of Cindy Wilson and Rich Minnick of Cumberland - who could resist those big cheeks, blue eyes, pink sunglasses and blonde hair? This is a face, our staff believed, that simply belongs on the cover of a magazine. If we didn't put her on one, someone else would," said Riggs.

"The picture was taken at Rocky Gap State Park on Father's Day 2007, making her almost 8 months old," said Wilson.

This year, the award-winning magazine and sister publication to the Cumberland Times News is also printing 10 other photographs that came close to being selected.

The June/July issue - on newsstands now - also contains an interview with actor and Cumberland native, Eddie Deezen, and a look at what could be done as early as next month in the latest effort to preserve the silk mill in Lonaconing.

The magazine also has announced the addition of Lori Deter to its staff as account executive. Deter comes to her position with Allegany Magazine after years of publishing and sales.

For more than 10 years, she was the regional advertising representative for the highly respected niche publication Doll Reader Magazine, which was once published in Cumberland.

In addition to her magazine background, Deter is a licensed Realtor.

Her parents are Lou and Dessie Carder. She was born in Frederick but moved to Mount Savage at the age of 5 and grew up there. She is married to Jeff Deter and has four children, Michael, Johnny, Samantha and Curtis, and three grandchildren, Kyra, Joseph and Nakiah.

An avid reader and traveler, Deter has been known to traipse the continent with her husband and son as they compete in national roller hockey competitions.

Allegany Magazine also announced that with the publication of the June/July issue, a single copy will cost a little more. The price has been increased to $3.95. The increase reflects the rising cost of shipping, printing and delivery, all the result of higher fuel costs.

Subscriptions received before the price increase will still be honored at the previous price. New subscriptions to the magazine will run $24 a year.
