Fun fair to benefit cancer patient

HYNDMAN, Pa. — A fun fair will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Hyndman High School to raise money for a 15-year-old Hyndman boy who is being treated for cancer.

The boy’s classmates have organized the fair, which will feature games, food and entertainment. Donations to support the family may be sent to Loretta Kline, c/o Hyndman Community At Large, 130 School Drive, Hyndman, PA 15545.



Garrett Swap Shop cuts down on trash

OAKLAND — The Garrett County Swap Shop diverted 40.70 tons of materials from the landfill in 2008, the county’s Solid Waste and Recycling Division has announced.

Workers at the refuse and recycling sites set out items for county residents to take home that would otherwise come to the landfill for disposal.

The Grantsville site swapped 14.56 tons of materials; Friendsville came in second by swapping 5.82 tons.

The swap shop is available at the landfill and six refuse and recycling sites

Recipients are responsible for determining the safety and suitability of any item they choose.

A refuse permit is not required to enter the landfill or refuse and recycling sites and recycling is free to all residents, businesses and visitors.

Luke, Oakland to receive funding

CUMBERLAND — Luke and Oakland will both benefit from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding for community facility projects.

Luke will receive $29,452 to help purchase a snowplow and dump truck. Oakland will use $50,000 for an HVAC system when the old National Guard Armory training facility is converted to a community center.

The money is part of $58.1 million being distributed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development programs.



Garrett College holds open house

MCHENRY — Garrett College Continuing Education and Workforce Development will hold an open house Aug. 18 from 3 to 7 p.m. in Room 205.

The fall schedule will be available and some instructors will attend. Participants can register for a class, sign up for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate toward a noncredit course and make suggestions for a new class.

Staff will be available to discuss degree and certificate programs as well.
