FROSTBURG — A new 2,700-foot sewer line being donated to the city so that concession stands and toilet facilities can be built at the Parris Glendening Recreational Complex is nearing completion, according to Brian Vought, who directs Frostburg’s parks and recreation efforts.
“I won’t be surprised if the work is done in a week or two,” Vought said Wednesday. “Chris Hovatter (city engineer) and I toured the project Tuesday and everything is coming along nicely.”
David Weimer, Braddock Construction, is donating the installation and materials at a cost of about $150,000. In return, the city this past spring agreed that Weimer would have no volumetric sewer charges and no combined sewer overflow charges for a nearby home he plans to build.
In addition, road access via Rynex Avenue will be provided for Weimer through the recreation complex and he will be paid a fee when new homes hook onto the sewer line.
Weimer has also requested that his property be annexed into the city.
Doug Lemmert, elected commissioner of water, parks and recreation and active in Frostburg area youth football organization, said that without Weimer’s generosity the sewer line would not have been placed.
Weimer said the Cougars, a team of elementary-age gridders, will move games from Calhoun Field to the Glendening complex in 2009.
“They have to wait until the concession stands are built, because the football equipment is so expensive they rely on that concession money,” Lemmert said.
Lemmert said the players, cheerleaders and dance team members total about 130. “On game day there will be 1,000 or so spectators at a game,” he said.
Vought said the 27-acre Glendening complex is used for soccer, football, baseball, softball and basketball. It has a playground, a walking trail and two fishing ponds stocked seasonally by the Maryland Department of Natural Re-sources.
