Second fire at Keyser tavern destroys building

KEYSER. W.Va. — An apparent rekindle of a fire late Monday at the Railsyde Tavern and apartment building burned the two-story building to the ground, according to the Mineral County Office of Emergency Services and Homeland Security.

Approximately 60 volunteer firefighters responded to the 11:26 p.m. alert sounded by the emergency center after a rekindle was reported at the tavern building at 53 Armstrong St. in numerous 911 calls to the emergency center.

Firefighters had first responded to that location Monday at about 7:38 a.m., when a fire was discovered in an exterior wall at the rear of the structure.

Investigation by the Keyser Fire Department determined the fire was suspicious. The West Virginia State Fire Marshal was notified of the incident to assist in the investigation.

The fire displaced occupants of three second-floor apartments and caused an estimated $45,000 in damages to the building and contents owned by Michael Burris and Jerry Friel.

There were no injuries reported in the initial fire or in the rekindle.
