Get ready for rough weather, urge public safety officials

CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Department of Public Safety, Homeland Security & Bureau of Police is advising residents to prepare for upcoming severe weather.

Several major tropical weather systems in the North Atlantic have the potential for coming ashore on the East Coast. The region may be impacted by strong winds, heavy rains and local flooding. Weather systems such as these can produce tornados and dangerous thunderstorms with widespread power outages.

The following basic supplies may be needed during any emergency period:

• A three- to five-day water supply (about five gallons for each person).

• Nonperishable food.

• Pet food, water, supplies and medications.

• First aid supplies.

• Battery-powered radio, flashlights and extra batteries.

• Sleeping bags or blankets.

• Extra clothing and shoes.

• Water purifying supplies, such as unscented ordinary household bleach.

• Prescription medicines and special medical needs supplies.

• Baby food, formula, diapers, etc.

• Personal hygiene supplies.

• An emergency travel kit with food, water, flares, maps, blankets, a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, etc.

• Cash.

Prior to any storm threat, secure lawn furniture and other loose outdoor items. This is also a good time to locate important papers, secure them in a waterproof container and maintain them in a safe place.

Stay tuned to radio and television for official weather information as well as any instructions issued by local emergency officials.

For additional information about emergency preparedness, log on to the Department of Homeland Security Web site, www.ready.com, or contact the local Emergency Management Division of the Allegany County Department of Public Safety, Homeland Security & Bureau of Police at (301) 876-9155.
