Kitchen sustains most damage when fire breaks out at home in Corriganville

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

CORRIGANVILLE — No injuries were reported in a fire that damaged an Iowa Drive residence shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Allegany County 911 Joint Communications Division.

Tanya Moomau and her children were reportedly not at home when fire broke out in the two-story residence.

“When we arrived, myself and fellow firefighter Keith Sturtz kicked the rear door in. Smoke rolled out and fire was rolling across the kitchen ceiling at that time,” said Lt. Mike Porter Jr. of the Corriganville Volunteer Fire Company.

The incident is being investigated by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Up to 20 volunteer firefighters responded to the 6:52 a.m. incident.

Porter estimated interior damage to the structure at $20,000. “There was a lot of damage in the kitchen and upstairs floor but we were able to save a lot of items,” he said.

Corriganville, LaVale, Mount Savage, Ellerslie and Bowman’s Addition volunteer fire companies responded to the fire at 11903 Iowa Drive. The incident was reported in a 911 call from a neighbor.

The victims were reportedly staying with relatives. Immediate assistance was provided by the American Red Cross. Allegheny Power crews also responded to the scene.
