ROMNEY — Patty Davis and Mayhew Chevrolet have been named the recipients of the United Way of Hampshire County’s individual and business Community Caring Awards, which were presented at the Annual Campaign Kickoff and Awards banquet on Aug. 27 at Frostburg State University.

In order for an individual to be nominated for this award, Hampshire County criteria states that he or she must reside in Hampshire County and demonstrate a long-time commitment to volunteering and donating to the United Way and/or community partners.

The business must meet the same criteria, in addition to encouraging workers to support the United Way by suggesting volunteer opportunities and/or conducting an employee campaign for contributions through payroll deduction. Davis and Mayhew Chevrolet have continued to prove their commitment to the community and to the United Way.

Pam Iman, chair of Volunteer Development for United Way of Hampshire County, says, “Community Caring is synonymous with Patty Davis; every community-minded effort has Patty’s fingerprints somewhere on it.” Patty Davis says she is active in the community because she is “in a position to give back, always having a passion for volunteering and helping others. Working for UPS has taught me what United Way does in each community; UPS gave over $60 million to United Way last year.”

United Way of Hampshire County is relatively new in the community, and Davis is serving as the second president of the organization, succeeding Dan Hileman.

“I see a tremendous need in Hampshire County,” says Davis, “and I want to make people aware of the great programs and services provided because of the help from United Way.”

A cancer survivor herself, Davis serves as president of the Hampshire County Cancer Coalition, ambassador of the American Cancer Society and board member of the Appalachia Cancer Coalition Network. She is past president of ERFRN, co-xhair of the Hampshire County Building Commission and Reach to Recovery with the American Cancer Society. A long-time resident of Hampshire County, she is married to Mitch Davis and has a daughter, Tamra.

The recipient of the business Community Caring Award, Mayhew Chevrolet, Inc. is a corporation committed to making Romney and the surrounding community a better place to work and live.

Bob Mayhew, president and CEO of Mayhew since 1988, motivates his employees, staff and community with his strong leadership. Mayhew became the first Legacy Leadership contributor to the United Way of Hampshire County leading the way for others to follow his commitment.

A member and past president of the Rotary Club of Romney, Clinton Lodge 86 AF&AM, Ali Ghan Shrine, Court 117 Jesters, Mayhew has also served as past president of the Hampshire County Chamber and the Planning Commission. He currently serves on the Romney Business and Professional Organization and the Board of Directors of The Bank of Romney.

In talking about the many efforts of Mayhew, Davis, president of United Way, says that he is “the go to man in the community. You can count on Bob to contribute to any effort that benefits those who need it the most.”

He is president and permanent trustee of the Loy Foundation, otherwise known as the Hampshire Arts and Historical Museum located at the former Coca Cola Bottling works, and plays an integral part in sponsoring community events and activities at that location.
