Agenda heavy for city mayor, council meeting

CUMBERLAND — A variety of items are listed on tonight’s agenda for the weekly meeting of the Cumberland Mayor and Council, including a city planning report on the U.S. Route 220 upgrade plans and how it will affect the Queen City.

City Planner David Umling will provide an up-to-date overview of the status of the plan to upgrade heavily-traveled U.S. Route 220.

In another matter, a resolution will be presented for issuance and sale of $9,070,000 in general obligation bonds that will be used for financing of streets and roads improvements.

A number of other resolutions will be considered, including one regarding granting of a property tax credit to the Cumberland Outdoor Club and a separate matter concerning possible participation in the Maryland Municipal League’s Geocache Trail Program.

The MML program is designed to raise awareness about the state’s cities and towns. It is scheduled to begin by the end of the year.

Also, the mayor and council will receive a $10,000 award from Atlantic Broadband as part of recently completed negotiations involving the award of a franchise agreement to Atlantic Broadband.

The city leaders will also consider a low income tax credit request by the Hampstead Group for the redevelopment of William Booth Towers at Somerville Avenue.

A number of departmental reports will also be presented during the council meeting that begins at 6:15 p.m. in the city hall council chambers.
