Group prepares for annual Halloween Parade

CUMBERLAND — The South Cumberland Business and Civic Association’s Halloween Parade is less than two weeks away, scheduled for Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m.

Judging of the children’s costumes will start at Smith Park at 5:30 p.m. Marsha Thomas has coordinated the event for 20 years and attendance has been up to 15,000 people.

Supporters of the parade help meet the expenses of more than $10,000. Financial contributors include the Allegany County commissioners, mayor and City Council, Imaging Center, Potomac Federal Credit Union, Harvey May, Potomac Farms Dairy, TWR, Squires Electric, AES, First United Bank & Trust, Howell Trucking, Hank’s Pharmacy, Scarpelli Funeral Home, AIRCON & Carl Belt Inc.

State fire marshal says haunted houses must meet code standards

CUMBERLAND — State Fire Marshal William Barnard has issued a reminder that State Fire Prevention Code requires adequate fire protection in “haunted houses” and special amusement buildings.

Requirements include a sufficient number of marked exits, automatic smoke detection in reduced-lighting areas and emergency lighting. Automatic fire sprinkler protection is required and prohibitions against flammable and combustible finishes and wall coverings exist. Open-flame devices and smoking are banned.

Post office closed Monday in observance of Columbus Day

CUMBERLAND — Post offices will be closed in observance of Columbus Day on Monday. Delivery of mail will be limited to Express Mail in the major metropolitan area.
