Alternate U.S. 40 paving project begins Monday; motorists should expect delays through November

Crews resurfacing from Campground Road to Long Drive

Cumberland Times-News

LAVALE — Beginning Monday, the Maryland State Highway Administration will grind and resurface approximately two miles along U.S. Route 40 Alternate between Campground Road and Long Drive.

SHA will complete the resurfacing project in early November, weather permitting. The work is part of the $7 million LaVale Streetscape Project that SHA began in spring 2007.

Motorists should expect lane shifts along U.S. 40 Alternate weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Variable message signs, barrels and flagmen will guide motorists through the work zone. Motorists should expect delays during construction and use extra caution through the work zone.

The overall LaVale streetscape project includes widening National Highway to provide a dedicated center left-turn lane for both directions and bicycle-compatible shoulders. The project also includes new sidewalks compatible with the Americans With Disabilities Act along each direction of U.S. 40 Alternate between Campground Road and Long Drive.

SHA will reconstruct traffic signals in the area. Landscape plantings and installation of ornamental pedestrian lighting will begin in the spring.

The drainage system was upgraded by installing new curb and gutter, pipes, inlets and a new pipe culvert at Harold Street and Oaklawn Avenue. SHA constructed a storm water management pond at Holly Field, which will help improve water quality. The entire project should be complete in spring 2009, weather permitting.

Citizens who have questions about traffic operations may call SHA’s District 6 Office at (301) 729-8400 or (800) 760-7138.
