Trauma course at ACM
CUMBERLAND — Addictions as it relates to trauma survival will be examined in a new continuing education course for health care and human service personnel Oct. 22 at Allegany College of Maryland.
The deadline to register for Understanding Addictions in Trauma Survivors is Monday.
The day-long course course explores the inevitable ways that childhood trauma manifests itself in adult symptoms and it addresses the cyclical connection between trauma and addiction.
Instructor Lisa Ferentz, is an adjunct instructor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work and is a licensed clinical social worker in private practice for more than 20 years, working with children, adolescents, individual adults, couples and families.
The course, scheduled by the ACM Center for Continuing Education’s Institute for Health and Human Services, meets from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Rally to support kids’ health
CUMBERLAND — Andrew Duck, candidate for the 6th District congressional seat, will hold a rally to support children’s health care Tuesday at 6 p.m. in front of Congressman Roscoe Bartlett’s office at 1 Frederick St.
Bartlett has voted twice against an expanded State Children’s Health Insurance Program, according to Duck.
Congress will vote whether to override President Bush’s veto of the program and Bartlett has promised to vote in favor of the veto.
The Tuesday rallies will be held across the 6th District to show support for SCHIP and oppose Bartlett’s votes.
Seedlings for sale by DNR
OAKLAND — The John S. Ayton State Forest Tree Nursery of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service is offering seedlings at cost.
Conifers may be ordered in multiples of 50, and hardwood seedlings in multiples of 100.
Orders will be taken until Feb. 28, but seedlings are sold on a first-come, first-served basis,.
Incentive programs are offered by the state or federal government for plantings of more than an acre. Call the Forest Service office at Mount Nebo at (301) 334-3296 for more information.

City church celebrates
CUMBERLAND — The Centre Street United Methodist Church will celebrate its 225th anniversary with guest organist Norman Scribner Jr. and the Sanctuary Choir on Oct. 21 at the 10 a.m. worship service.
Tours of the church will be offered for people who want to learn more about its history and the buildings.
Planners will discuss LaVale
CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Planning and Zoning Commission will discuss the LaVale Region Comprehensive Plan at its regular meeting Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Room 100 of the County Office Complex on Kelly Road.
Other agenda items include Christie Road rezoning, Appalachian Regional Commission grant status and a future land use plan for the county.
