Flu season makes early debut in county

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

CUMBERLAND — The Western Maryland Health System has reported four confirmed cases of influenza in the last couple of weeks, marking the beginning of flu season.

The Allegany County Health Department is reminding area residents of the importance of practicing proper coughing and sneezing hygiene, washing hands thoroughly and obtaining an annual flu vaccination.

Shots are available at the health department on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m., and from 1 to 7 p.m. Oct. 29. No appointment is necessary. The cost of vaccinations is $25 for influenza and $40 for pneumococcal. The health department can bill Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield, but some plans require a referral from a primary care provider.

The health department will hold a flu clinic Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Each year influenza results in the hospitalization of roughly 200,000 people in the U.S., and more than 36,000 people nationwide die from influenza-related complications. The flu shot effectively prevents most cases of the flu and is recommended for anyone who wants to reduce the likelihood of influenza illness or prevent the spread of the flu to others.

Flu protection is particularly important for children, pregnant women, those who are immune-compromised or have any type of long-term illness, those older than 50, health care providers, and anyone working or living with people at high risk for influenza complications.

For more information, contact the health department at (301) 759-5090 or log on to www.alleganyhealthdept.com.
