County planners to meet Wednesday

CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Planning and Zoning Commission will meet in a work session Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Room 100 of the County Office Complex on Kelly Road.

Advance copies of the agenda may be obtained in Room 104 or at http://gov.allconet.org/pcagenda.htm. The commission will hold its regular business meeting Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.



Chamber to honor businesses at dinner

CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Chamber of Commerce will hold its 22nd Annual Outstanding Business Recognition Dinner on Thursday at the Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort. A social hour at 6 p.m. will be followed by dinner at 7 p.m.

This year’s honorees include the Western Maryland Health System, Lifetime Eyecare Center and Doug Schwab and Betsey Hurwitz-Schwab.

‘Local stars’ needed for May 1 dance event

CUMBERLAND — Organizers of this year’s “Dancing with the Local Stars” are looking for participants for the May 1 event.

The Family Crisis Resource Center, with the assistance of the 2009 Class of Leadership Allegany!, will present the fundraiser at 7 p.m. at Windsor Hall. Last year’s event generated nearly $15,000 of revenue that supported services and clients of FCRC.

Anyone who is interested in dancing should e-mail fcrc@allconet.org or call (301) 759-9246. Volunteers with choreography expertise are also needed. All proceeds from “Dancing with the Local Stars” will benefit Family Crisis Resource Center services and clients.



Outward Bound program speaker at Garrett today

MCHENRY — Josh Brown of the North Carolina Outward Bound School will present information about his program today at 6:30 p.m. in Room 224 of the Continuing Education Building at Garrett College.

In addition to the Appalachian Mountains, the program has grown to include the North Carolina Outer Banks, Florida Ten Thousand Islands, the Bahamas and the Chilean Andes.

Petersburg customers advised to boil water

PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Petersburg Water Works has reported a 12-inch main line break on the South Side, including the Point area, U.S. Route 220 South, the Dorcas system, Rough Run, Boot Hill, Johnson Run, Arnold Road and Turkey Knob.

Water customers are advised to boil the water before drinking it, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, bathing or preparing food to kill bacteria that may have contaminated the water.

City crews are repairing the line and expect the problem to be resolved by Wednesday. For more information, call (301) 257-4877 or (304) 257-2377.



Moorefield holiday train tickets on sale

MOOREFIELD, W.Va. —Tickets for the North Pole Express, the annual children’s train in Moorefield, are on sale at the Hardy County Public Library, (304) 538-6560, at www.heritageweekend.com and at the Potomac Eagle Ticket Office at (304) 424-0736.

The round-trip trains will depart the Jefferson Street Railroad Crossing at the South Branch Stockyard parking lot Dec. 4 and 5, at 5 and 7:30 p.m. The Potomac Eagle, South Branch Railroad and West Virginia Railroad Authority combine equipment, personnel, time and talent with scores of Hardy County volunteers to make the event possible. Tickets are sold at a discount for children 2 through 12 years old. Children under 2 years old ride free. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Riders are treated to a reading of “The Polar Express,” a visit from Santa, Christmas caroling, cookies and hot chocolate, and numerous surprises. Children should bring their own storybook if they have one and wear pajamas under their coat.

The trains, sponsored by the Hardy County Tour and Craft Association, are a fundraiser for Heritage Weekend, which will be held Sept. 25 and 26.



Veterans Day event to be held at FSU

FROSTBURG — The Frostburg State University Veterans Affairs Office, Sigma Tau Delta and the 3AM Society are sponsoring a Veterans Day reading Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Lane University Center Room 201.

Community members have volunteered to read passages from writings by and/or about veterans and their service as a means of honoring all veterans, past and present.
