County begins flushing hydrants

CUMBERLAND — Allegany County Utilities Division personnel will flush fire hydrants in the following water districts.

• This week: Grahamtown/Wrights Crossing, Upper/ Lower Consol, state Route 36 and Vale Summit.

• Week of Nov. 16: Carlos/Shaft, Klondike/National/Ocean Hill, Borden/Zihlman and Morantown.

• Week of Nov. 23: Eckhart and Hoffman.

Water may be discolored during this process. If there are any questions, call the Bowling Green Service Center at (301) 729-3311 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.



H1N1 clinic Friday for priority groups

CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Health Department will hold a mass H1N1 vaccination clinic at the Allegany County Fairgrounds Multipurpose Building on Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for all priority vaccination groups, which include the following people:

• Pregnant women.

• Anyone who lives with or provides care for infants younger than 6 months.

• Health care and emergency medical services personnel.

• Anyone 6 months through 24 years old.

• Anyone 25 through 64 years old who has medical conditions such as asthma; neurological/neurodevelopmental conditions; chronic lung conditions; heart disease; immune deficiency due to HIV or AIDS, cancer, or steroid use; or those with blood, endocrine, kidney, liver, or metabolic disorders

Both injectable vaccine and mist vaccine will be available.

Young farmers needed as advisers

CUMBERLAND — The Maryland Department of Agriculture is seeking nominations to fill two positions on the Young Farmers Advisory Board, one each from the Eastern Shore and Garrett or Allegany counties.

Candidates must be Maryland residents under the age of 45 years at the beginning of the three-year appointed term. They must derive at least 50 percent of their personnel income from farming or agricultural activities.

Training for parents of special ed kids

LAVALE — The Parents’ Place of MD will present its third annual all-day conference titled Around the World of Special Education in One Day on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church on Vocke Road.

The training is for families whose children have disabilities and special health care needs and for the professionals who work with them. Co-sponsors are The Family Network, Allegany County Service Coordination, Abilities Networks and Allegany County Family Support Services.

Topics to be covered this year are Understanding Tests and Measurements, Coping with Stress, Assistive Technology Part 1- Devices and Services, Part 2-Solutions for Struggling Students and Sensory Integration Strategies. A panel of experts will discuss Transitioning from Life in the Classroom to Adult Life in the Community.

More than 30 area agencies and service providers will provide resources and offer families information and guidance in planning their child’s educational program and developing a plan for their future.
