ACM offering law enforcement course

For the Cumberland Times-News
Cumberland Times-News

CUMBERLAND — A recognized expert in interviewing and interrogation skills for use in law enforcement and corrections will lead a three-day continuing education course Dec. 3 through 5 at Allegany College of Maryland.

Gary L. Aschenbach Sr., a retired Maryland State Police sergeant, developed the course — Interview and Interrogation — from his 25 years of experience as an undercover operative, criminal investigator and supervisor.

After he retired from the force, Aschenbach founded Law-Tech Consultants, a firm that specializes in training, consulting and private investigations.

He holds a behavioral science degree from the University of Maryland and is a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command.

Aschenbach is an accomplished lecturer and instructor who provides training to state, federal and local law enforcement agencies as well as school administrators, insurance fraud investigators, judges and prosecuting attorneys.

Interview and Interrogation is approved for certification by the Maryland Police and Corrections Training Commission for law enforcement and corrections personnel.

His instructor certifications include that group and others, such as the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education. The course also is approved for West Virginia law enforcement and corrections personnel.

The three-day course is designed to familiarize new and seasoned investigators with techniques to detect deception, which can be accomplished by reading non-verbal body language, neurolinguistics and analysis of verbal and written statements — all topics to be addressed.

Presented by ACM’s Institute for Professional Development and Extended Learning, a unit of the college’s Center for Continuing Education, and the Western Regional Corrections Training Academy, the course meets from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each of the three days in College Center Theatre.

The deadline to register is Nov. 26. To do so, call (301) 784-5341. For more information, call (301) 784-5338.
