Savage Brush Fire

Brush fire burns nearly 50 acres

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

BLOOMINGTON - Danny Bever can't say enough about the efforts of the area's volunteer firefighters in battling a brush fire that consumed 30 to 50 acres off Savage River Road on Thursday.

As deputy chief of the Bloomington Volunteer Fire Department, he was able to see first hand how those crews were able to quickly contain the blaze that began at 3:47 p.m. when a tree toppled onto a power line.

"The high winds caused a fast-moving fire," he said.

Bever also gives credit to the Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter that flew him over the land, giving him a visual scope of the blaze that in turn helped volunteers on the ground.

Volunteer companies assisting included Potomac, Barton, McCoole, Rawlings, Midland and Piedmont (W.Va.) along with Tri-Towns Rescue Squad.

Bever said all-terrain vehicles, provided both by numerous fire departments and individuals aided in the task.

The Bloomington Ladies Auxiliary provided food and drink.

Crews from Bloomington remained on the scene with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources more than four hours later. Bever said he wasn't sure, but it was possible some members would remain there for the better part of the evening.
