Pinto water rate hearings in January
CRESAPTOWN — The Maryland Public Service Commission’s hearings concerning a surcharge and rate increase for Pinto area water customers have been rescheduled to Jan. 7.
The commission will hear evidence in the case at 10 a.m. and will receive public comment at 7 p.m. at the Allegany County Center for Career and Technical Education.
The evidentiary hearing will continue Jan. 8 at 9 a.m. if more time is needed.
Gregg resumes chairman position
OAKLAND — Ernie Gregg will serve as chairman of the Garrett County Board of Commissioners from Dec. 12 until the end of the current board’s term in 2010.
The Board of Commissioners voted in 2006 to rotate chairmanship. Gregg served from 2006-2007 and Denny Glotfelty served from 2007-2008. Fred Holliday served briefly during 2008, but relinquished the position to Glotfelty, who served from 2008-2009 after the death of Holliday’s son from cancer.
During the 2002-2006 term, Gregg served as the sole chairman.
County accepting payments today
CUMBERLAND — Allegany County government was closed Monday due to the employees being on furlough.
Property tax and water and sewer bill payments made today will still be credited for the month of November.
Payments can be deposited in the drop-off box outside the County Office Complex on Kelly Road when the office is closed.
Buy local at holiday shopping event
LAVALE — Life Fitness Management is holding a holiday shopping party Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. as part of a buy local campaign.
Local food growers and producers and artisans will offer samples and have their wares for sale.
Participants include Firefly Farms, Cedar Rock Farms, DeBerry Farms, Higson’s Farms, Inn at Walnut Bottom and Deep Creek Cellars. Arteco Gallery has assembled art and crafts from a wide variety of local artisans including jewelry, pottery, fine art, lamps, glass, wood, paper and copper.
Health and wellness items will be for sale and gift basket artist Debbie Martin will be available to package the purchases. A gifting station will remain set up Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
A portion of the proceeds from this event will go toward the Allegany College of Maryland Health and Wellness Scholarship sponsored by Life Fitness Management. The fitness center is located at 1226 National Highway. For more information, call (301) 729-2275.
Car dealer collecting toys, food for charity
CUMBERLAND — As part of the Subaru Share the Love Event, Thomas Subaru-Hyundai will collect toys for Boys and Girls Clubs of America and nonperishable food items for the Western Maryland Food Bank on Saturday and again Dec. 12 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Representatives from the Boys and Girls Clubs will help with the festivities.
Refreshments will be provided and Santa Claus will attend. Adults and children will receive a small gift for participating.
