— DANVILLE — A Ridgeley, W.Va., woman suffered minor injuries in an accident Monday on U.S. Route 220 that police said was the result of using a cell phone while driving.

Allegany County Sheriff’s Deputy Gary Crowe said Teresa Ann Rose, 36, was treated at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center and released following the 11:20 a.m. crash at Route 220 and Willow Run Road.

Police said Rose was operating a 2000 Pontiac sedan northbound when the vehicle traveled out of control and crashed into some mailboxes affixed to a long board along the highway shoulder.

Rose was taken to the hospital by Tri-Towns Rescue Squad, according to the Allegany County 911 center.

Rose was cited for driver using hands to use handheld telephone while motor vehicle in motion.

Crowe said the first-time offense carries a fine of $83, second offense $140 and third offense $160.

The citation was issued as the sheriff’s office continues to target distracted drivers this month. April has been designated as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
