‘Up there’ at 105

Allegany Health Nursing and Rehabilitation administrator Debra Buckalew helps Alverda Kelley with a birthday greeting Friday afternoon at the facility in Cumberland. Family, friends and staff members joined in celebrating her 105th birthday. Kelley was born Aug. 4, 1908, in Landis, W.Va. A card was shared from President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama as well as proclamations from Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and members of the House of Delegates. Asked to divulge her secret to a long life, she told those in attendance that she didn’t believe she was more than a century old, although she did admit to being “up there.”
