— BITTINGER — A 16-year-old male youth was fatally injured and two adults hospitalized with severe injuries after a tractor-trailer and an SUV collided at a Garrett County intersection early Thursday afternoon, according to the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office.

The youth, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, succumbed to his injuries at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center in Cumberland following the 1:30 p.m. accident that occurred at Bittinger Road (state Route 495) and Glendale Road.

Also injured and taken to hospitals were James D’Amato, 72, of Oakland, a passenger in the SUV operated by the youth, and Kevin Wayne Herrell, 49, of Rawlings, who was operating the tractor-trailer that was involved in the crash.

Police said preliminary investigation indicated the youth was operating a Toyota SUV with Amato as a passenger at a stop sign at Glendale Road when, for unknown reasons, the SUV entered Bittinger Road intending to travel north. The SUV was then struck by a southbound tractor-trailer operated by Herrell.

Bittinger Volunteer Fire Department and Southern and Northern rescue squads also responded to the scene upon alert by the Garrett County 911 center.

The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
