Study: Give judges, sheriff salary raises

No increases for board of education, commissioners

— CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Sheriff and Orphans Court judges would receive salary increases beginning in 2015 if the recommendations of a salary study commission are approved by county commissioners.

E. William DuVall II, chairman of the salary study commission, reported on the commission’s recommendations at Thursday’s regular commission business meeting at the county office building on Kelly Road.

The raise for the sheriff “would bring our sheriff on a par with those of like counties and like duties,” DuVall said.

The commission recommended an increase of the sheriff’s salary to $70,000 in 2015 and a 3 percent increase each year after, with the salary reaching $76,491 in 2018. The current salary is $63,378, according to Allegany County code.

No salary increases were recommended for members of the board of education, the board of license commissioners (also known as the liquor board), the board of elections and county commissioners.

“I might add, to the public, that was the commissioners’ position. They asked for no salary increase,” DuVall said.

For Orphan’s Court judges, the commission recommended the chief judge receive a 3 percent increase in the first year plus $300 for the first year and a 3 percent raise each year thereafter.

For associate judges, the increase would be 3 percent each year. In 2015, the chief judge would earn $5,748.59 and in 2018 would earn $6,281.65. Associate judges would earn $5,448.59 in 2014 and by 2018 would earn $5,953.82.

The recommendations would be effective for officials elected to office or appointed in 2015 through 2018, if commissioners agree to the changes.

Commissioners also ap-pointed Donna Ray to the Allegany County Mental Health Advisory Board for a term expiring on June 30, 2014.

Commissioners also ap-pointed William M. Kenny as a member of the Housing Authority of Allegany County to a term expiring June 30, 2014 and re-appointed Everett A. Spiker to a second five-year term expiring June 30, 2017.
