Trailer fire kills Oakland resident

OAKLAND — Fire inside a pull-behind travel trailer Friday evening in Garrett County claimed the life of an Oakland man.

The identity of the victim, the sole occupant of the trailer, is being withheld until an autopsy is performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, according to a news release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The fire on Horseshoe Lane was discovered by a neighbor and reported to the Garrett County 911 Center shortly before 6 p.m. About 25 firefighters from the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department battled the blaze.

The incident is being jointly investigated by deputy state fire marshals and detectives from the Garrett County Sheriff’s Department.

Preliminary investigation determined the fire started inside the trailer, where there were no working smoke alarms, according to the news release.
