Berkeley Springs man loses life when boat flips

GREAT CACAPON, W.Va. — A juvenile was rescued by Maryland State Police medevac helicopter Trooper 5 after a boat capsized in the Cacapon River in Morgan County on Saturday. The youth’s grandfather died as a result of the incident.

Ronald Clatterbuck, 75, of Berkeley Springs was fishing with his son Ross and grandson Chasen when their boat capsized. The small boat was pulled over a dam by swift currents at about 1 p.m. in the Power House Dam area of the river. All three occupants were thrown into the water.

Morgan County officials said Ross Clatterbuck was able to bring his father to the shore but Ronald Clatterbuck could not be revived.

A swift-water rescue team from Allegany County was dispatched in addition to the helicopter.

Trooper 5 rescued the stranded youth at about 2:45 p.m. by lowering a basket to the rock and hoisting him to the safety of the helicopter.

The juvenile was not injured and was released to family members on scene, according to a Trooper 5 spokesman.
