— OAKLAND — A Garrett County detective took an Oakland man into custody Thursday night on state Route 135 after the suspect allegedly assaulted a female victim at his 11th Street home, fired a handgun into the ground and then fled in his vehicle.

Jose Benitez Alvarado, 33, had a loaded .380 caliber derringer underneath the passenger seat of his 2000 Chevrolet Blazer when he was stopped near Mount Zion Road, police said. The detective spotted the suspect vehicle on state Route 495 near Bittinger Road before making the traffic stop.

Several 911 calls were placed by neighbors who reported hearing the incident and the gunfire, police said.

Alvarado was charged with second-degree assault, two counts of reckless endangerment with a firearm, carrying/possessing a loaded handgun, DWI/DUI and other traffic-related offenses, following the 10 p.m. incident.

He was held in the Garrett County Detention Center on $6,000 bond.
