CAPON SPRINGS, W.Va. — A smoke detector and a barking dog were credited Thursday for alerting a sleeping Hampshire County couple to fire inside their residence on Elkridge Road near state Route 259, according to Capon Springs Fire Chief Gerald Brill.
Ted Braithwaite and his wife escaped the 2:30 a.m. fire without injury.
First-arriving units found fire shooting through the roof of the rear section of the single-story dwelling, Brill said.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
Brill said fire damage occurred to the area of the first floor where the fire originated and smoke and water damage occurred to the remainder of the large brick and frame residence.
The loss in damage to the structure and its contents was estimated at more than $50,000.
Thirty volunteer firefighters from Capon Bridge, Capon Valley, Slanesville, Gore and Gainsboro responded to assist Capon Spring firefighters.
Units were on the call for nearly six hours.
