Cumberland, Frostburg honoring elected officials

CUMBERLAND — Both Cumberland and Frostburg are honoring city elected officials this week in separate events.

The city of Frostburg will pay tribute to eight mayors who are still living, including current Mayor Robert Flanigan, in a photo ceremony Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. in the Frostburg Community Center.

A brief reception sponsored by the Armstrong family will follow.

The former mayors include Arthur Bond, David Linn, William Davis, John Roland, Harry Bowman, John Bambacus and James Cotton.

Joining them will be City Administrator John Kirby, who is celebrating his return to Frostburg 30 years ago in October 1983. His service as city administrator began in the fall of 2004 after many years of service with Allegany County.

The Cumberland mayor and City Council will honor past city elected officials with a brief open house and program Oct. 24 at noon in the City Hall rotunda.

A luncheon for the officials will follow in Council Chambers.

The current officials decided to reflect on the leadership of their counterparts after recently observing the 200th anniversary of the beginning of construction of the National Road, the 225th birthday of the founding of the city and the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of City Hall.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the first production of water from the Lake Gordon Dam.
