Pa. man killed in head-on crash near Somerset

SOMERSET, Pa. — One person was killed and three others injured Monday when a delivery truck collided head-on with a tri-axle truck carrying a load of coal on U.S. Route 30 in Quemahoning Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The victim was identified as 29-year-old James E. Harris Jr. of New Alexandria, who was a passenger in the 2009 GMC delivery truck operated by John N. Carlson, 49, of Youngwood.

Carlson and drivers Eric Mankin Sr., 50, of Windber and Alvin E. Naugle Jr., 56, of Friedens were taken to Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown, police said.

The accident occurred at 1:54 p.m. when the westbound truck operated by Carlson traveled into the eastbound lane where it struck the 2008 International tri-axle operated by Mankin.

Upon impact, the Mankin vehicle sideswiped a 2011 Ford F-250 operated by Naugle.

The tri-axle truck overturned and dumped its load of coal onto the roadway, police said.

All the occupants were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The accident blocked the roadway for several hours.
