W.Va. man found after ATV wreck

Overnight search leads to injured resident’s discovery

FORT ASHBY, W.Va. — An overnight search by West Virginia State Police and Fort Ashby fire and rescue volunteers led to the discovery of a Ridgeley man who was found down an embankment and suffering from multiple injuries after he crashed his four-wheeler.

William Skidmore, 41, was admitted to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center after being discovered in the Baker Hollow Road area of Fort Ashby at about 4 a.m.

No condition report was available from the hospital.

“Mr. Skidmore crashed the four-wheeler and appeared to suffer head trauma as a result of the crash. He was unresponsive to questioning and had difficulty moving,” said a state police spokesman.

Shortly after midnight, state police at Keyser began an investigation of a missing person report regarding Skidmore.

Callers said Skidmore had left several hours earlier on a four-wheeler and had failed to return home. His vehicle was found parked at the friend’s house where he was last seen leaving on his four-wheeler.

Several attempts made to contact Skidmore by cell phone were unsuccessful.

Trooper J.D. Paskowski, Trooper P.B. Butler and Sgt. S.B. Huffman contacted Skidmore’s cell phone provider to determine his approximate location.

A general distance from a nearby cellular tower was obtained, providing a wide search radius.

Weather conditions prevented aerial support in the search.

A Mineral County Sheriff’s Department K-9 was placed on standby until a starting location or a more specific area could be defined.

The Fort Ashby Volunteer Fire Department provided various members and Emergency Search Unit 37-80 to assist in a ground search of local trails and wooded areas of Fort Ashby.

Skidmore was treated at the scene and was taken to the hospital by the Fort Ashby Ambulance.
