Rock size of soccer ball, victim's husband says

— By Evamarie Socha The Daily Item

— DANVILLE — It was like an explosion in the car, Randy Budd said, when an 8-pound rock about the size of a soccer ball shattered the windshield of his family’s Nissan Rogue, hit his wife, Sharon Budd, squarely in the face and left her with disfiguring, life-threatening injuries.

But miracles have been happening since late Thursday, said Budd, 53, of Uniontown, Ohio. And his wife of 31 years, the mother of their four children — who survived a severe and aggressive form of breast cancer more than a decade ago — is fighting again.

Randy Budd spoke to The Daily Item after he was interviewed on a radio station near Canton, Ohio.

Mr. Budd detailed the incident for a deeply concerned community, where his 52-year-old wife is a beloved teacher known for her selflessness and dedication.

While those details are harsh, he said, he wants people to know what his wife, his family, is enduring since four suspects allegedly threw rocks from the Gray Hill Overpass atop Interstate 80 in White Deer Township, Union County.

Two teens — brothers Brett Lahr, 18, and Dylan Lahr, 17, of 322 Showers Road, New Columbia — face charges that include aggravated assault. Two unidentified juveniles have also been questioned.

Support inspiring

The outpouring of support from Ohio and Pennsylvania has amazed his family, Mr. Budd said.

The Budds on July 10 were en route to New Jersey, where Mr. Budd, who works in hospitality, had business. Mrs. Budd and daughter Kaylee, 19, planned to visit New York.

“We had tickets to go to Mamma Mia,” the Broadway show, Mr. Budd said.

“It was pitch dark, close to midnight,” he said, when the Budds were driving on I-80 east through Union County. “It just felt that, you know, that darkness inside a car, talking.”
