Casino pulls in $2.5M in first month

CUMBERLAND — The Rocky Gap Casino Resort reported earnings on $2.5 million in its first full month of operation according to June revenue figures released Friday by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency.

With the casino at Rocky Gap opening to the public on May 22, the June earnings report represents its first full month of operations.

“It sounds pretty strong to me. I know they are pleased with the weekends, but I believe they have hoped for better turnouts during the week,” said Bill Valentine, Allegany County commissioner.

Rocky Gap Casino Resort is operated by Lakes Entertainment based in Minnesota.

Efforts to reach officials with Lakes Entertainment for comment were unsuccessful by press time.

Rocky Gap has 558 slot machines, also known as video gaming terminals, and 10 gaming tables.

The earnings reports broke down the $2.5 million gross gaming revenue, as follows, per unit per day: $128.59 for slot machines and $1,111.67 for banking table games.

“We think they need to get the conference center going. It’s suppose to open in November,” said Valentine.

Lakes Entertainment is currently constructing a conference center as an addition to the lodge on the north side facing Lake Habeeb.

Valentine said that income from holding conferences will help the resort’s bottom line.

“Their project is not fully complete,” said Valentine.

Rocky Gap is one of four casinos in Maryland.

The revenue report also published the earnings for the remaining three gambling establishments.

The Maryland Live! Casino in Anne Arundel County generated $51 million.

The Hollywood Casino Perryville in Cecil County earned $7.8 million and the Casino at Ocean Downs in Worcester County took in $4.8 million.

Maryland Lottery grossed $1.795 billion in 2012 in total gambling revenues from scratch off cards and off-site terminals to casino earnings.

Allegany County is expected to benefit by receiving 5.5 percent of the profits from Rocky Gap gambling operation.

The Rocky Gap Casino Resort currently employs about 350 people.
