New Germany School program planned Saturday

GRANTSVILLE — New Germany State Park’s one-room schoolhouse will be featured in a program titled “Uphill Both Ways” on July 13.

Park naturalist Tesia Gnagey will provide a glimpse into what school was like in a one-room schoolhouse in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Participants will have the opportunity to wear the dunce cap or test their knowledge with an old-fashioned spelling bee.

The New Germany School was originally built in the late 1800s and served an average of 25 to 40 students each year, with grades one through seven taught in the same room. Although the original schoolhouse building burned down in 1902, the school reopened in the early 1910s and continued to serve the local community until the 1940s. Efforts are under way to restore the schoolhouse as an interpretive center.

Since parking at the schoolhouse is limited, the program will begin at the New Germany Lake House.

The program will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. Park entrance fees will be waived for those attending the program; however, the Friends of New Germany will be accepting donations. For more information, call the ranger station at 301-895-5453.
