City woman hit utility pole on Virginia Avenue

CUMBERLAND — The identity of a 23-year-old Cumberland woman who died of injuries following an early-morning vehicle crash Friday in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue was disclosed Sunday by the Cumberland Police Department.

Shelly Leeann Murphy succumbed to her injuries Friday afternoon at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. She was transferred there after initially being taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center by a Cumberland Fire Department ambulance.

The accident occurred shortly before 1 a.m., when the victim’s 2000 Mazda traveled out of control and struck a utility pole on Virginia Avenue near Industrial Boulevard. The victim was found unconscious at the scene by Short Gap (W.Va.) Volunteer Fire Department ambulance personnel, who were in the area after taking a patient to the Cumberland hospital. The volunteers administered first aid just before the Cumberland ambulance arrived at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation by the Cumberland Police Department. First-responders were alerted to the crash at 12:52 a.m. by the Allegany County 911 center.

The victim’s identity had been withheld by police until notification of the victim’s next of kin was made.
