Reward offered for veteran’s beloved dog

— By SHELLEY TERRY - Staff Writer

ASHTABULA, OHIO — When Lenel Moore recently went on vacation, he left his prized pooch in his family’s care.

Twinkle, a 13-year-old rat terrier, is the 88-year-old veteran’s constant companion. She was lost July 6 near West 58th Street and Adams Avenue when a family member let the dog outside to go to the bathroom. Twinkle hasn’t been seen since.

“She’s a frisky little dog; she keeps him going,” said Moore’s daughter, Sandy, who is in a panic to find her father’s pet before he gets home.

Despite Facebook and online notices posted by the family, Twinkle’s whereabouts remain a mystery.

Sandy Moore knows her father will be devastated, if the family can’t find the dog. She is offering a $50 reward.

In November 2012, Lenel Moore was in the news for a happy occasion. He was honored as one of the first black Americans to serve in the Marine Corps during World War II, receiving a Congressional Gold Medal at the Veterans of Foreign War Hall in Ashtabula.

Congress authorized the medals to be awarded to the Montford Point Marines — 20,000 black men, including Moore, who trained at a segregated corner of Camp Lejeune called Camp Montford Point.

Moore served in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Only eight members of his platoon survived the battle.

Anyone with information of Twinkle’s whereabouts is asked to call Sandy Moore at 440-344-8369.
