— ALBRIGHT, W.Va. — Three people are in the hospital after a boating accident in the Cheat River in Preston County, W.Va., Thursday evening.

At approximately 5 p.m. in the Big Nasty area of the Cheat River, three people were on a jon boat when it was swept against a rock by the swift currents and capsized. Two people managed to swim to shore and were taken to Preston Memorial Hospital by ambulance, while a third was stranded on a rock for approximately two hours.

A swift-water rescue team was called in but was unable to negotiate the currents, so authorities requested assistance from Maryland State Police Aviation. At about 7:30 p.m., the crew of Trooper 5 and the Cumberland Fire Department HEAT team hoisted the victim to safety. The victim was flown to Preston Memorial Hospital for further evaluation.

The Big Nasty is named for its notorious swift currents.
