LAVALE — An armed man arrested Thursday morning in the LaVale Wal-Mart has been identified as 26-year-old Brian Michael Lucas of Fort Ashby, W.Va.
Lucas was arrested when Maryland State Police responded to a 10:37 a.m. complaint of a “subject in the bathroom displaying a handgun.”
Police said an employee of the store observed Lucas removing a handgun from a shopping bag. Lucas then reportedly placed the handgun back in the bag and continued walking in the store area.
Troopers arriving at the scene arrested Lucas, who was found in possession of a semi-automatic .45-caliber handgun. The weapon was not loaded.
Lucas was processed for arrest at the state police barrack on a charge of possession of a concealed deadly weapon. He was jailed on $35,000 bond set by a district court commissioner, pending bail review in district court.
Wal-Mart spokesman Brian Nick told the Times-News that Lucas drew the attention of store personal for a “behavioral reason” that caused a store associate, or employee, to follow Lucas into the men’s bathroom. The employee then determined that Lucas was in possession of a handgun.
“When the man (Lucas) left the restroom, he was accompanied by associates who remained with him until police arrived.
“The store manager said police arrived within minutes. Hats off for the great work the police did and their very, very quick response,” said Nick from the Wal-Mart corporate headquarters in Arkansas.
Nick also said security cameras are located throughout Wal-Mart stores. He declined to be specific about the locations of the surveillance cameras.
