Deputies thwart suicide attempt

Man tased while trying to run into path of train

MCCOOLE — A man who first threatened to kill himself with a butcher’s knife was prevented from running in front of an oncoming train when Allegany County sheriff’s deputies used a Taser on him Monday afternoon near 21st Bridge Road.

Law enforcement was dispatched at 3 p.m. and found the 23-year-old holding the knife to his chest, according to Sgt. Mike Beal.

Beal said that when the man realized a train was approaching he ran toward the tracks. The Taser didn’t stop him, but slowed him so that he couldn’t reach the rails. At that point, he stabbed himself in the chest and was hit with another Taser, allowing deputies to secure him and get the knife.

While en route, deputies had requested an ambulance and alerted the Allegany County Negotiations Team.

First aid was provided by officers. The man was taken by Tri-Towns EMS to McCoole for Trooper 5 medevac helicopter transport to Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment and mental evaluation.

Assistance was provided by Mineral County 911 Center, an Allegany County medic and Westernport’s Potomac Fire Company. Allegany County Joint Communications Center coordinated the response.
