FLINTSTONE — Troopers from the Cumberland Barrack of the Maryland State Police, along with undercover officers, worked a special traffic and criminal operation on Interstate 68 at M.V. Smith Road Friday morning.
The three-hour event was advertised to oncoming traffic via a variable message board along the highway, alerting motorists that they would soon be encountering a police K-9.
Police stopped 49 vehicles and made eight drug arrests. Authorities allege that one vehicle contained a large quantity of illegal prescription pills intended for sale at Frostburg State University. Money, illegal drugs and the vehicle were all seized from that particular suspect.
MSP in Allegany County is committed to reducing traffic fatalities and taking criminals off the roads, according to an agency press release.
In 2012 there have been 10 traffic fatalities in Allegany County compared to only one in 2011.
With the upcoming holidays, travelers should plan to see more troopers on the roadways, the press release stated. Troopers will be actively searching for aggressive drivers, seat belt violations and drunk or drugged drivers.
Police recommend that drivers don’t speed, drive defensively and wear seat belts.
