CUMBERLAND — Allegany County commissioners last week approved the sale of the multitenant building at the North Branch Industrial Park for $600,000.
Schroeder Industries will purchase the building to accommodate the expansion of its business.
Commissioners approved the contract at their regular business meeting Nov. 29. The company had been leasing the building.
The company’s last expansion increased employment there to 70 jobs and the future may hold more employment increases, said Matt Diaz, county economic development director.
“The building is on the tax rolls,” said Allegany County Commission President Michael McKay.
The manufacturer of specialized advanced liquid filtration solutions is based out of the Pittsburgh area.
“Our relationship with Allegany County has been a key part of our success,” Gus Schroeder, the company’s president, said in late 2011. “They have always been ready to assist us with each step of our expansion and growth throughout our history in Cumberland.”
The additional space allowed the company to expand its production capacity and place new equipment, according to officials.
“The Allegany County commissioners are delighted for the success of Schroeder worldwide and the corporate decision, once again, to expand filtration manufacturing here in Allegany County,” said McKay when the expansion announcement was initially made.
Diaz has highlighted the strength of Schroeder. “This is a well-positioned manufacturing and sales entity. Schroeder is a leader and offers a distinctive, high-quality product to fulfill a specialized, scientific ongoing need. The customer base — marine to mining industrial applications — is diverse.”
Schroeder’s presence in Allegany County dates to 1982. The company located in Cumberland, then relocated to Mexico Farms when it expanded its operation in 1994 and again in 2001 and 2008.
In other business at last Thursday’s meeting, commissioners appointed Susan Eisel as chairwoman of the Allegany County Animal Control Advisory Board for a one-year term expiring in December 2013.
The next meeting for the board is Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Allegany County Office Building at 701 Kelly Road in Room 100.
