Casino could open May 22

Rocky Gap gets license approval

BALTIMORE (AP) — Maryland regulators say the state’s fourth casino could open as early as May 22 at the Rocky Gap Lodge & Golf Resort near Cumberland.

The Maryland State Lottery and Gaming Control Commission approved an operating license Friday for lodge owner Evitts  Resort LLC. Evitts is a subsidiary of Minnetonka, Minn.-based Lakes Entertainment Inc.

A controlled demonstration of the slot machines and table games is set for May 20. A successful test would enable the casino to open May 22 with 558 slot machines, 10 table games and 250 new employees. It would be allowed to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The commission also approved 24-7 gambling at the Ocean Downs casino near Ocean City for the summer season, May 17 through Sept. 30.
