Body believed to be city woman

Suspect leads police to remains of Lisa Ann Simmons

CUMBERLAND — Police on Monday discovered a body believed to be that of Lisa Ann Simmons at an industrial park in Winchester, Va., according to the C3I Unit. The 43-year-old city woman, believed to be a victim of a homicide, disappeared on Sept. 5.

The body was recovered by local law enforcement and Virginia State Police. The discovery was made possible by the cooperation of the suspect, Stephen George Schleuniger, 44, of Cumberland, police said.

Schleuniger was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Simmons’ disappearance, despite law enforcement officials not having located her body. He was arrested in Berkeley County, W.Va., and also charged with first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

Simmons was reported missing Sept. 9 and, shortly thereafter, the investigation led to Schleuniger becoming a suspect, police said.

A search warrant executed on the Browning Street residence the two lived in revealed additional evidence that led to charges against him, police said, including bloody footprints on the front porch and bloodstains on a rug and the floor in a front room.

Schleuniger, who has been jailed without bond since his October arrest, is scheduled to appear in Allegany County Circuit Court on Dec. 3.

The remains were sent to the Virginia State Medical Examiner’s Office.
