— CUMBERLAND  — Two same-sex couples were joined in marriage at the Allegany County Courthouse on Wednesday in civil ceremonies. The two weddings were among the first same-sex marriages performed in the county, with the first taking place at 8:40 a.m., said Allegany County Circuit Clerk Dawne Lindsey.

In Garrett County, the first same-sex couple was also married Wednesday morning, said Garrett County Circuit Clerk Sondra Buckel. Buckel said her office has had many inquiries, but as far as she knows the couple married Wednesday were the first same-sex couple to both file an application and be married in a civil ceremony. Buckel performed the ceremony, she said.

Since same-sex weddings became legal on the first day of the year, it’s possible a wedding by a clergy member could have been the first in either county. The Times-News has been unable to determine if any weddings officiated by clergy took place after midnight in the new year.
