Driver injured in wrong-way Interstate 68 crash in Garrett

FRIENDSVILLE — A Morgantown, W.Va., woman was injured Wednesday night and taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following a near head-on collision on Interstate 68 in the area of the 10-mile marker that occurred as she was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes, according to Maryland State Police.

Darlene Benoit, 56, was driving a 2011 Hyundai Sonata that nearly struck a 2001 Ford Explorer being driven by Lauren Furhman, 22, of York Haven, Pa., police said.

Benoit suffered unspecified injuries. Furhman was treated at the scene by Northern Garrett Rescue Squad personnel but declined transport to a medical facility.

Police said Furhman swerved to avoid being struck by the Benoit vehicle that was traveling in the wrong direction.

The abrupt evasive action by Furhman caused her vehicle to overturn and roll over several times.

After impact, the Benoit vehicle traveled off the roadway in the area of the 15-mile marker where it became stuck in a snow bank, police said.

Benoit suffered from a medical condition that led to her confusion before the accident, police said.

Garrett 911 emergency center alerted the first-responders at 9:08 p.m.
