City skier captures gold medal in Special Olympics winter games

CUMBERLAND — As a member of the U.S. downhill skiing team in the 2013 World Winter Special Olympics in South Korea, Cumberland resident Jake Reynolds won a gold medal in alpine skiing Saturday.

“Follow Jake’s progress on his quest for the gold at the World Special Olympics in South Korea!” his Facebook page prompts fans who log on to Olympic Team Jake.

The athletes have been challenged by icy slopes, followed by heavy snow, which promised better and safer conditions for the downhill runs.

The 20-year-old skier moved to Cumberland from Los Angeles in 2007 with his mother, Pam, who owns the Bruce House Inn B&B on Fayette Street. He has attended Allegany High School and the Career Center and participates in the annual autism walk and Hooley Plunge.

Reynolds is a member of Scout Troop 89 and has been skiing competitively for two years. One of his coaches is Doug Schwab.

The 2013 World Winter Special Olympics in Pyeong Chang opened Jan. 30. The athletes’ progress can be followed at www.specialolympics.org.
