City woman dies of injuries suffered in South End crash

23-year-old’s vehicle struck utility pole on Virginia Avenue

— CUMBERLAND —  A 23-year-old city woman has died of injuries she suffered when her vehicle crashed into a utility pole in the 400 block of Virginia Avenue early Friday, according to the Cumberland Police Department.

The identity of the victim was being withheld by police late Saturday afternoon, pending notification of the victim’s next of kin.

The crash occurred at about 12:50 a.m., when a 2000 Mazda operated by the victim struck a utility pole, leaving her unconscious at the scene.

A Short Gap Volunteer Fire Department ambulance was in the area at the time and administered aid to the victim prior to the arrival of a Cumberland Fire Department ambulance.

The victim was taken by the city ambulance to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for initial treatment prior to being transferred to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. She reportedly succumbed to her injuries Friday afternoon, police said.

The accident remains under investigation by the Cumberland Police Department.
